DESTINY
"Too Much Of A Good Thing"
TEASER
FADE IN:
1 EXT. SIGMA PHI EPSILON FRAT HOUSE - NIGHT. 1
A typically buzzing college party, in full swing as a young
couple walk up to the doors of the frat house. The door opens
and we...
FOLLOW THEM INTO:
2 INT. SIGMA PHI EPSILON FRAT HOUSE - CONTINUOUS 2
It's mayhem in here. Kegs are on demand, surrounded by whooping
jocks as beer is sprayed everywhere but into people's glasses.
Clusters of cheerleaders and other members of the Beautiful
People try to look disinterested as lustful eyes scan them over.
The music snob over by the stereo cranks up 'B.Y.O.B.' by System
Of A Down to cheers from all the nearby rockers...
ANGLE: DAWN
Looking like she wishes she was in a galaxy far, far away, has a
plastic cup of something in one hand, but it doesn't look
alcoholic. She's dolled herself up - her hair is neatly curled
and she's wearing enough make up to help her stand out, but
nobody seems to be looking.
Dawn is jostled by a pack of whooping jocks as they manhandle an
unfortunate freshman past her, and with a sigh she straightens
her clothes, looking for somewhere quieter to stand.
She makes her way towards a sofa, spotting an empty space and
quickly sitting in it - but as we:
PAN RIGHT
We see a couple making out, "get-a-room" style right next to
her. With a grimace, Dawn stands again.
She's scanning the crowd for friendly faces when we hear:
TORI
Dawn! Hey, Dawn!
Dawn looks over as TORI comes pushing through the crowd towards
her. Unlike Dawn, Tori isn't made up or dressed up, but still
looks enviously gorgeous as she finally reaches Dawn, gasping
for breath.
TORI (CONT'D)
I need oxygen!
DAWN
We need to find a better party.
This place is kinda...
TORI
Loud?
DAWN
I was going to say 'bad,' but
yeah, 'loud' works too,
TORI
I mean, there's just so many
people! And they're all here!
Now!
Tori takes a deep gulp of whatever she's drinking as Dawn eyes
her suspiciously.
DAWN
Do you need to head outside for
some air or something?
TORI
Um, yeah, thanks. This many
people in one place, it just gets
me a little spooked, is all. I
don't mix well with crowds.
Dawn glances over as a CHEER from one corner of the house grabs
her attention - two more party-goers are busy spraying beer into
the air, dousing a pair of giggling frat girls.
DAWN
(wearily)
You just have to pick the right
crowds.
Dawn looks back to Tori, who is still fidgeting nervously.
DAWN (CONT'D)
C'mon, let's find Jake and Suzi
and get out of here.
Dawn leads Tori out of the room, just missing JAKE and SUZI as
they head in from the opposite side. Both have beers, and both
look like they're enjoying the party.
SUZI
So this is, what, the first of
seven?
JAKE
Yeah, apparently it's an annual
Tulane tradition near the start
of the new term. Seven parties,
in hand picked, highly secret
locations, where the cool and the
crazy can bop along and boogie
down.
SUZI
Did you just actually say 'bop
along'?
JAKE
(shrugs)
Yeah. Must be the beer.
Jake takes a swig, then notices an anxious-looking freshman,
BRETT, walking past. Jake grabs him by the shoulder.
JAKE (CONT'D)
Hey, uh, Brett, right?
BRETT
Uh, y-yeah, that's me.
JAKE
(offers his hand)
Jake Ruth, you took me on at that
Tekken 4 marathon in the break
room last week, remember?
BRETT
(shakes hands; nods)
Oh, uh, yeah, yeah, I remember.
JAKE
Good. Well, seeing as you were
the victor that day, I'd like to
give you a gift, as a token from
one warrior to another.
Suzi rolls her eyes as Jake points Brett towards a keg guarded
by three serious-looking students.
JAKE (CONT'D)
See those three guys over there?
BRETT
Uh-huh.
JAKE
I've heard they're the ones
guarding the finest home brew in
this whole place, but only those
considered worthy may taste some.
(grins)
Would you like to be worthy?
BRETT
(wary)
What do I have to do?
JAKE
Just tell 'em Jake sent you. And
thank me later - I haven't tried
any myself yet, but I hear it's
got a real kick!
Uncertain, Brett looks to Suzi for help, but she just nods and
smiles, and Brett wanders off towards the three men.
SUZI
You just enjoy corrupting people,
don't you?
JAKE
Hey, the more the merrier. Maybe
next time I'll kick his ass and
he'll have to do me a favour!
A new song kicks in, and as Jake YELLS his appreciation for it,
we
DISSOLVE TO:
3 INT. FRAT HOUSE - BEDROOM - NIGHT. 3
A darkened, empty bedroom in the frat house - the sounds of the
party audible through the door. With a THUMP, it opens to reveal
Jake, much worse for the wear by this point. He staggers towards
the bed.
He sits down heavily at the foot of the bed, taking a deep
breath and looking ready to hit the sack. He reaches one hand
back - and brushes someone's leg!
Jake jumps to his feet and looks round - Brett is lying on his
front on the bed, his head angled away from Jake.
JAKE
Woah, sorry there, man, didn't
mean to disturb you.
Jake aims for the door again and stumbles back out of the room.
PUSH IN ON BRETT'S FACE
Brett's face is pale and clammy looking - his eyes are blank and
unblinking, and his slack jaw hangs open. He isn't moving - this
isn't good...
BLACK OUT.
END OF TEASER
ACT ONE
4 INT. DAWN'S DORM ROOM - DAY. 4
As the sunlight from a gloriously sunny morning filters into
dawn and Tori's shared dorm room, we look down on the peaceful
face of Dawn as she slowly wakes up.
Yawning and stretching, she sits up in bed, looking round the
room as her senses come into focus.
She's startled as Tori suddenly jolts herself out of her sleep
with a YELP, Tori's hair sticking up and her eyes heavily
bagged.
DAWN
Tori?
TORI
(dazed)
Whu?
Dawn grins as she steps out of the bed, throwing open the room's
window.
DAWN
Looks like you had a better night
than me after all, huh?
Tori GROANS and flops back down onto her bed. As we:
PULL BACK
We see that Tori's bed is covered in feathers. Dawn gives Tori's
bed an odd look.
DAWN (CONT'D)
(re: the feathers)
You've molted.
TORI
Huh?
Tori looks down at her bed, then pulls her covers back around
her.
TORI (CONT'D)
Great... Just great.
(beat)
Everything hurts.
DAWN
I thought you said you weren't
drinking?
TORI
I wasn't... at least, I don't
think I was. One of those guys
from the football team gave me a
drink when I asked for a Diet
Coke. I forgot to remind him to
hold the rum. After that, it's
mostly a blur.
Dawn chuckles and steps into the small adjoining bathroom, where
we hear the taps come on as Dawn starts getting ready.
DAWN (O.S.)
Well a night like that'll
certainly give you a hangover.
TORI
I always thought the emphasis was
on the 'over' part...
Dawn pops her head back into the room, toothbrush sticking out
of her mouth.
DAWN
Just drink a couple of glasses of
water, take two aspirin, and get
out into the fresh air - you'll
feel better in no time.
Dawn leans back into the bathroom as Tori weakly sits back up,
pressing her hands against her temples. She contemplates the
feathers surrounding her:
TORI
I had this weird dream, too, like
I was falling. A lot.
Dawn steps out of the bathroom and heads for the wardrobe.
DAWN
Oh, that's supposed to mean
something, I think. Willow used
to try and teach me stuff about
how to interpret dreams.
TORI
So what does falling mean?
DAWN
Um... not sure. I couldn't ever
remember my dreams so I kinda
forgot what she told me, sorry.
TORI
Never mind. I think I'm going to
wait for the pain to stop before
I tax my brain with actual
thinking.
Dawn folds her clothes for the day over one arm and steps back
into the bathroom, just as Tori finally throws back her bed
covers - and we see the extent of the feather problem. They're
everywhere.
Tori sighs and then flops back down, the feathers floating up
into the air on impact.
5 EXT. MAIN TULANE QUAD - DAY. 5
Tori and Dawn are heading to class, wandering across the main
thoroughfare of the university. Tori is wearing thick shades and
has her hair down, trying to find any protection she can against
the bright sunlight, while Dawn takes a deep, satisfied breath,
taking in the fresh morning air.
DAWN
Look, don't feel bad. I'm sure
ninety per cent of the people who
went to that party feel like you
this morning.
TORI
You'd think that'd help, but it
really doesn't.
DAWN
Well, I bet Jake and Suzi feel
rough too!
TORI
Suzi never feels rough, Dawn. If
I didn't know better, I'd say she
was using the black arts to-
SUZI (O.S.)
Hey, guys...
Dawn and Tori turn round as Suzi slinks towards them, also
wearing dark glasses and also looking like she had a rough night
of things. Dawn can't resist a chuckle.
SUZI (CONT'D)
Laugh all you want, Dawn, one day
you'll be the one waking up with
the sound track to 'Gladiator'
playing in your head, and we'll
be the ones laughing about it.
DAWN
Trust me, never gonna happen.
SUZI
You planning on avoiding drink
for the entirety of your stay
here?
DAWN
Pretty much. I'm like my sister,
she can't hold her beer either.
She had a bad experience one
night at college, and... let's
just say it brought out the cave
girl in her.
TORI
How's Jake?
SUZI
Add how much we hurt together and
double it. And then throw in a
kick in the gut.
DAWN
That bad?
SUZI
See for yourself.
Suzi leads the girls towards the anthropology building, into:
6 INT. ANTHROPOLOGY BUILDING HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS 6
Standing by a water fountain in the hallway is Jake, but he's
not exactly drinking from it - with one thumb pressed on the
water release button, he's dunked as much of his head as he can
into the bowl itself, letting the cool water cascade over his
head as the girls walk into frame.
He spots them and stands upright, splashing water everywhere as
he runs his hands through his hair and manages a smile.
JAKE
(brightly)
Good morning, ladies!
SUZI
You're not fooling anyone.
JAKE
(smile drops)
Oh, thank God. Having to open my
eyes that much was killing me!
Jake leans against the wall, then lets himself slide down to the
floor.
JAKE (CONT'D)
Let me guess, you three all have
Satan setting up camp in your
brain stems too?
TORI
Except for Dawn.
SUZI
Yeah, either Slayers get a free
pass to avoid having hangovers,
or Little Miss Summers here just
isn't as much of a party animal
as we all seem to be.
DAWN
Hey, party at night, pay for it
in the morning.
TORI
And you couldn't have said that
last night?
JAKE
Can we save the smug mockery for
later, please? I'm in genuine
need of sympathy here!
Dawn reaches down and pulls Jake to his feet with a flex of
Slayer muscles.
DAWN
You know, you could try drinking
the water instead of showering in
it.
JAKE
What my body needs is twelve more
hours sleep, and have you seen
the water they classify as
'drinking' here?
I swear, one day I ran a tap in
my bathroom, and a frog came out.
TORI
Ick!
JAKE
Seriously! Big, green, slimy -
kind of looked like my cousin
Hannah.
The girls laugh, but are interrupted as a student walks over.
This is SIMON, and his serious expression quickly kills the
groups' laughing.
JAKE (CONT'D)
Hey, Simon. What's up? You look
like somebody gave you a winning
lottery ticket, then took out a
kidney.
SIMON
You haven't heard?
DAWN
Heard what?
SIMON
Brett, that new kid on campus,
he's in a coma.
JAKE
What?!? How?
SIMON
Nobody knows, they found him in
this frat house after one of
those parties cleared out last
night. He's over in the hospital
right now, they're waiting to
hear back on some test results or
something.
TORI
Oh, no...
DAWN
Do they have any ideas what
happened to him?
SIMON
All I know is he walked to that
party on his own two feet and
left it on a stretcher.
Simon bows his head and walks away, leaving the group in shocked
silence for a beat.
TORI
That poor guy...
SUZI
Hey, didn't we speak to him last
night?
(beat)
Jake?
Jake's face has drained of color, and he slowly puts his head
into his hands.
JAKE
It's my fault...
SUZI
How's that?
JAKE
I told him to go drink! Somebody
told me that those guys with the
special home made booze had the
best stuff in the house, and
Brett was looking pretty nervous
so I figured some beer'd loosen
him up, and...
DAWN
Jake, don't be crazy. You just
told him about it, you didn't
make him drink the stuff.
JAKE
(darkly)
I may as well have done.
Jake scoops his bag up off the floor and starts walking away -
noticeably, away from the classroom. Dawn calls after him.
DAWN
Hey, where are you going? Class
starts in two minutes!
JAKE
(over his shoulder)
I'm going to the hospital!
He turns a corner and disappears from view, and we stay on the
girls for a beat. Suzi and Tori both look to Dawn for a plan of
action, and she blinks as she realizes.
DAWN
What?
SUZI
What are we going to do?
DAWN
Why ask me?
TORI
You always seem to know what to
do.
DAWN
Not this time.
Dawn looks down the hallway after Jake, then to the classroom
door nearby, then back to the hallway.
DAWN (CONT'D)
(sighs)
Alright, Suzi, you go with Jake.
Keep an eye on him, make sure he
doesn't take the fall for
something he hasn't done. You can
copy mine and Tori's notes after
class.
SUZI
I'm on it.
Suzi scampers away after Jake, and Dawn and Tori head to class
at last.
7 INT. TULANE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - CORRIDOR - DAY. 7
Suzi hurries down the hospital corridor, searching for Jake, and
finds him sitting on a bench just outside an entrance to one of
the wards, his head in his hands.
Relieved, she places a hand on his shoulder to get his
attention.
SUZI
(breathless)
You know, for a guy who spends
most of his life sitting very
still, you can move pretty darn
fast when you want to!
JAKE
They won't let me in to see him.
Suzi takes a seat as a sombre Jake continues.
JAKE (CONT'D)
I told his parents I was a friend
of his from Tulane, but they said
they just want to keep access to
close family for now.
SUZI
Do any of the doctors know what
caused the coma yet?
JAKE
Not yet.
Jake leans back, his head against the wall.
JAKE (CONT'D)
I opened the floodgates, Suz.
SUZI
No, you didn't, I was with you
the whole time, remember? All you
said to him was-
JAKE
(interrupts)
All I said to him was basically
'hey, kid! Drink what those guys
are selling!' I hadn't even tried
it myself! I mean, home brewed
booze? How many eighteen year
olds do you know that can drink
that without getting alcohol
poisoning?
Suzi pauses for a beat to think.
JAKE (CONT'D)
Exactly.
SUZI
So what are you going to do? You
can't just stay here, Jake, you
don't know how long it'll take
for the doctors to get some
answers.
JAKE
I'm going to admit this is my
fault.
SUZI
(stern)
No, you're not. You're going to
come back with me to the campus
until we can figure this out.
Alright?
Jake looks over, and Suzi doesn't look like she's going to take
'no' for an answer. Jake lowers his head and reluctantly nods.
8 INT. ALPHA EPSILON PI FRAT HOUSE - AFTERNOON. 8
Another day, another frat house - and another party in the
works.
BEN AND JASON INTO FRAME.
They're drawing up the battle lines for tonight's extravaganza -
some food is being laid out in the kitchen, but more important
is the well-stocked fridge full of beer.
As Jason stacks up CDs next to the stereo, Ben walks over to
speak to GREGOR, a pale, skinny Eastern European looking
student, who is standing quietly in a corner and watching the
preparations.
GREGOR
(thick accent)
How goes the preparations?
BEN
So far, all good, my Slavic
friend. We have food, smokes,
beer and music, and a very
exclusive guest list. Now all we
need is the cover of darkness,
and another keg of your recipe,
and we're on our way to round two
of the forty-second annual Tulane
University's Seven Days Of
Mayhem!
Gregor looks unimpressed by Ben's enthusiasm, and Ben coughs
nervously before continuing.
GREGOR
I trust there will be no more...
incidents?
BEN
Oh, like that dude who put
himself in a coma?
Listen, between you and me, he's
not the first student who drank
too much and fell down, and he
won't be the last. I know that
sounds kinda heartless, but we
can't look after everybody who
comes through our doors! What
people do at one of our parties
is their own business.
GREGOR
I see. Do you have the money?
Ben nods, checks over his shoulder to make sure nobody is
looking, then fishes out a roll of bills from his shorts pocket,
handing it to Gregor, who tucks it away. Ben smiles broadly -
the deal now closed.
9 EXT. ANTHROPOLOGY BUILDING COURTYARD - DAY. 9
Dawn is walking away from the tall building, the lines of
departing students around her telling us class has finished,
when Suzi catches back up to her.
DAWN
Oh, hey. How's Jake doing?
SUZI
He's back at his dorm, I had to
talk him out of confessing again
at the hospital. He's taking this
whole thing pretty personal.
DAWN
He's just that kind of guy, I
guess.
SUZI
You said it.
(beat)
Uh, Dawn? Can I ask you a favour?
DAWN
Sure, what's up?
SUZI
Well, after last night's party,
as you already know, Jake and I
got a little wasted...
DAWN
(smirks)
Hadn't noticed.
SUZI
And the thing is... I think I
lost a few things.
DAWN
Like what? Money?
SUZI
Clothes.
DAWN
(gasps)
Suzi!
SUZI
Ssh! Keep your voice down!
Suzi ushers Dawn to a quieter part of the courtyard.
DAWN
Suz, what did you do?
SUZI
Nothing bad, don't get all Mary
Tyler on me. I just had a few too
many drinks, and there was a
pool, and it was hot...
Suzi leaves the rest unsaid, and Dawn chuckles.
DAWN
So what have you lost?
SUZI
Uh, a shoe, the left one, this
blue shirt with the Levellers
logo on, and the scrunchie I put
my hair up with afterwards.
DAWN
And let me guess, you want me to
help you find them at the frat
house, right?
SUZI
Could you? I'd be forever in your
debt.
DAWN
No problem. Let's go.
The girls link arms and head off.
