37 INT. PONTCHARTRAIN HOTEL - PENTHOUSE BEDROOM - NIGHT. 37
Inside a smaller room just off the main suite, which is doubling
as a cloakroom judging by the piles of expensive coats and
jackets tossed onto the single bed in here. There are two small
windows looking out across the city.
The door handle starts to turn, and Suzi steps in, closely
followed by Gregor.
SUZI
So my friends told me, if I
needed something to liven up my
party, you were the guy to ask.
GREGOR
(nods)
They spoke the truth.
Gregor closes the door and turns to face Suzi, who glances round
the room, looking for Dawn.
SUZI
So! I guess all I need to do now
is make sure you don't surprise
me with any hidden costs, right?
A beat. Gregor blinks, and Suzi's eyes flick left and right,
hoping Dawn heard that and took the hint.
GREGOR
Do not worry, my merchandise is
excellent value for money. My
stocks are a little low at the
moment, but in a week or two I
will have plenty more to sell.
SUZI
(overly enthusiastic)
That's great! Because, you know,
I'd hate to just jump out and
catch you off guard before you
were ready!
She laughs nervously, and Gregor raises a curious eyebrow.
GREGOR
Are you alright, miss? You seem a
little... edgy.
SUZI
What? Oh, no, I'm fine, I just...
(beat; sighs)
Screw it.
(calls out)
Dawn!
Gregor turns as an adjoining door opens and Dawn steps in,
drawing her sword from inside her jacket.
DAWN
(to Suzi)
Sorry. It's kinda loud out there.
SUZI
Well... there's your demon.
GREGOR
Who are you?
(sees sword)
A Slayer!?
DAWN
That's right. We need to have a
few words about what your
'special brew' did to a friend of
mine.
GREGOR
(backing up)
I cannot be held responsible for
the affects of my merchandise,
Slayer. All things in moderation.
DAWN
(raises sword)
I've got something else you can
try in moder...
SMASH! The closest window bursts inwards in a shower of glass,
as Nikolai swings into the room on a long rope.
Dawn and Suzi shriek and turn away, but as Nikolai charges at
Gregor, he's tackled, punched several times and knocked to the
ground, Gregor quickly climbing out through the empty window
frame and heading up to the roof.
DAWN (CONT'D)
(finally looking round)
...ation.
SUZI
What happened?
NIKOLAI
(groans)
He's heading for the roof!
Dawn jogs for the window, pausing to yell at Nikolai.
DAWN
What the hell was that?
NIKOLAI
You talk too much! I got tired of
waiting.
With an irritated huff, Dawn climbs out through the window.
Suzi looks at Nikolai and all the broken glass. Then she looks
at the rope dangling nearby.
SUZI
(confused)
Where did you get the rope?
38 EXT. PONTCHARTRAIN HOTEL - ROOF - NIGHT. 38
Dawn clambers up onto the rooftop, using a nearby fire escape.
The lights from the party's dance floor flicker up here - making
the roof a constantly changing landscape of color.
Dawn spots Gregor making a run for it on the opposite side of
the roof, and chases across after him.
By the time she's crossed the roof, Gregor has jumped across to
the rooftop opposite, and as she watches he manages to grab hold
of another fire escape.
DAWN
Stop!
Gregor turns to look at her and grins, pulling himself up onto
the closest floor of the fire escape.
GREGOR
Say please.
(laughs)
Sorry, Slayer! I think it is time
I took my business elsewhere.
Gregor scampers up the rest of the ladder, hopping across to one
leading the rest of the way up to the next roof.
She looks down - the gap's too far for her to jump. She stands
up on the edge of the hotel roof and takes aim with her sword.
DAWN
Don't make me do this!
Gregor, almost at the top of the ladder, laughs back at her.
GREGOR
Do what?
Dawn narrows her eyes - and THROWS the sword!
It clangs off the top of the ladder harmlessly, missing Gregor
by several feet. He howls with laughter.
GREGOR (CONT'D)
Great aim! What kind of a budget
Slayer are you?
Gregor continues to cackle as Dawn watches - a self satisfied
smirk on her face. A sudden loud CREAK catches Gregor's
attention.
Dawn's sword may have missed Gregor, but the rusted buttress
holding the ladder against the wall wasn't so lucky, and with
another agonizing SHRIEK of tearing metal, it buckles, starting
to fall away from the roof and taking the ladder down with it.
Gregor's hands scrabble through the air as the ladder falls away
from the side of the building - and with a last howl of fear, he
plummets down toward the street below.
As Dawn looks over the rooftop and down to the street with a
pained look, we...
DISSOLVE TO:
39 INT. JAKE'S DORM ROOM - NIGHT. 39
Suzi watches on anxiously as Amy busies herself with what looks
like a small chemistry set, laid out on Jake's bedside table.
The jar of fluid recovered from Gregor's dorm room is there,
along with several small vials of chemicals, and as the still
comatose Jake lies in the bed, Amy places a syringe in a small
beaker full of a mix of purple and blue liquids, drawing a full
dose's worth.
SUZI
Will this do it?
AMY
Hopefully. Using the sample we
found, I was able to isolate the
narcotic agent and find a
suitable antidote quite easily -
I'm just using a mixture of
substances to cancel out the
narcotic effects.
DAWN
Okay, science 101 is all very
interesting, but can we see if
this works, please?
Tapping the syringe and squirting out the air bubbles, Amy rolls
back Jake's sleeve and carefully injects him with it.
Suzi squeezes Dawn's arm for comfort as they wait - and after an
agonizingly long beat, Jake starts to stir, blinking and
shifting in the bed.
With a gasp of relief, Suzi dives down to be by his side as he
comes round, Jake blinking rapidly as his eyes try to focus
again.
JAKE
Uh, guys? What's going on? Why is
everyone in my room?
(sniffs)
And why do I smell like bad
oysters?
Amy turns and smiles to the others. A beaming Tori hugs Pete,
and Dawn smiles too - but drops the smile when she makes eye
contact with Amy.
DAWN
We're good here. You can go now.
Amy hesitates, then thinks better of answering back and starts
to pack her things away.
As Jake sits up in the bed, Pete slapping his back warmly and
Tori and Suzi both hugging him, Dawn quietly slips outside.
40 INT. DORM HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS 40
Nikolai is waiting outside Jake's room, and he looks up as Dawn
carefully closes the door behind her and steps over.
NIKOLAI
I take it your friend is okay?
DAWN
Yeah, and now we know we can help
the other student too, so we're
all good.
Nikolai nods, and there's an awkward beat where neither of them
speak. Dawn breaks the silence.
DAWN (CONT'D)
How's your arm?
NIKOLAI
My arm?
DAWN
Yeah, it looked like you bruised
it a little after you gung ho'd
the window back at the hotel.
Nikolai grins, stretching his arm stiffly a few times.
NIKOLAI
Sore. But I've been hurt worse.
Dawn nods, and Nikolai registers her tight-lipped look and
chuckles. She frowns.
DAWN
What's so funny?
NIKOLAI
You. You should be happy that
your friend is safe, yet you're
out here, scolding me for what I
did.
DAWN
Well, you did kinda wreck the
nice, quiet plan I had to take
care of that demon.
NIKOLAI
I was concerned for your safety.
DAWN
You were... what?
NIKOLAI
I thought I saw him reaching for
a weapon and I didn't think you'd
noticed, so I jumped in. Looking
back, I can see I was a little
hasty.
DAWN
Yeah, you were. I can take care
of myself, you know.
NIKOLAI
So I can see.
(nods towards door)
Say good-bye to your friends for
me, alright?
He turns and starts to walk away. Dawn calls after him.
DAWN
So you're just going to go?
NIKOLAI
Do you want me to stay?
Dawn pauses, and Nikolai chuckles again and shrugs.
NIKOLAI (CONT'D)
Exactly. Good night, Slayer.
DAWN
It's Dawn.
NIKOLAI
(pauses)
What?
DAWN
My name. It's Dawn. You know,
makes a change from just saying
'Slayer' all the time.
NIKOLAI
(nods)
Good night, Dawn.
He turns a corner and disappears from view. Dawn stares after
him for a thoughtful beat, then turns and steps back into Jake's
room.
DISSOLVE TO:
41 INT. TULANE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - CORRIDOR - MORNING. 41
Jake is talking to a middle aged couple, presumable Brett's
parents, and after shaking hands with them he turns and walks
towards Dawn and the others, who are waiting further down.
DAWN
Well? Is he gonna be okay?
JAKE
He'll be fine. He made a quote
unquote 'miraculous' recovery
that I'm assured had nothing at
all to do with being injected
with a strange blue fluid last
night.
AMY (O.S.)
Oh, I think in this case virtue
is its own reward.
The group turn to see Amy walk over to them, wearing a white lab
coat and bearing a Tulane Medical School badge.
JAKE
Check out Dr. Quinn!
TORI
How did you get in to see Brett
last night, anyway?
AMY
Being a tenured professor at the
university does grant me certain
privileges. Suffice to say, Brett
will make a full and rapid
recovery, just like Jacob.
The team start to head out, Amy stepping in alongside Dawn.
AMY (CONT'D)
Well, now that we've got all of
that out of the way, I think we
can focus on something more
important, like-
DAWN
(snaps)
More important than what? Saving
my friend's life?
The others keep on moving - they can sense this could get ugly
so they want to be out of the blast radius.
AMY
Dawn, I just meant-
DAWN
Oh, I know what you 'just meant.'
You were going to say we should
get back to training, studying,
doing all the things a good
little Slayer would do, right?
Well, here's a little history
lesson for you. Do you know what
kept my sister alive longer than
any of the hundreds of dumb
things the Watchers Council tried
to drill into her?
AMY
(deep breath)
No, I don't.
DAWN
Her friends. When the Master
drowned her, Xander gave her CPR.
When Adam had to be stopped, they
all gave her the power to fight
him, and when I almost got
sacrificed by Glory, it was
Buffy's friends who all helped
save me.
Dawn glances at Jake and the others, who look like they all wish
they were somewhere else.
DAWN (CONT'D)
So the next time you want to try
and tell me something is 'more
important' than any of my
friends, you just remember that.
Because I know I will.
Dawn turns on her heels and walks away from Amy, who can only
watch as she pushes open the hospital's exit doors and heads
outside.
42 EXT. TULANE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - ENTRANCE - MORNING. 42
Dawn leads the gang down the steps and away, a frustrated
looking Amy watching them from just inside the entrance.
As the gang walk into the camera, we...
